Pan-American Highway

 The "Pan -American" highway, known in Costa Rica and other Latin American Countries as the "Inter-American" highway, is the backbone of the road system in Costa Rica.

Totally paved, the Pan-American highway enters Costa Rica on the North, at a point known as "Peñas Blancas", on the border with Nicaragua and exits on the South at "Paso Canoas", on the border with Panama.

The Pan-American Highway with a total extension of 658 Kms. long (408 miles), runs the entire Country from North to South and passes through the Capital City of San Jose at almost halfway of its total lenght.

The following are some of the Pan-American highway distances:

  • From San Jose southbound to the Panama border runs 347 Kms. (215 miles).
  • From San Jose Northbound to the Nicaraguan border runs 311 Kms. (193 miles).
