ISLA DEL CAÑO
Osa, Puntarenas

The Biological Reserve Isla del Caño is located in the Peaceful Ocean, in front of Corcovado National Park in the Peninsula de Osa, approximately 15 km sea inside of San Pedrillo point, and has an extension of 200 hectares in the terrestrial part and 2.700 hectares in the marine one. The island has a great archaeological importance, due to in precolombines times was used as a native cemetery. The cultural materials are remainders ceramics and appliances líticos carved, including the typical spheres of the Diquis. The presence of remainders cerámicos, suggest that the island was a commercial exchange point along the Peaceful coast.
The island is cover by a rainy tropical evergreen forest, with approximately 158 species of plants, trees of 50 meters of height can be found where excel the thick trees of vaco, also called tree of milk because of the white latex that exudes and that can be drunk. Other characteristic species of trees of this place are the guapinol, the higuerón, the wild cocoa, the hule and the garumo, where plants grow epífitas as the bromelias and orchids.
The fauna in the island is scarce. The fowls are represented by uans 10 esecies, being the most common the heron of the cattle, the crab-hawk and eagles. About mammals have been observed the four eyes fox, tepescuintle, some species of rats and several of bats. Besides, small snakes, frogs and lizards.
The island protects very important marine environments, where the coral reef is emphasized for its extension and richness of species. Fishes, lobsters, crabs, cambutes (snails), seagrass and mammalians as the dolphins and whales can be found in this island. These two last species are found in danger of extinction.
