LA AMISTAD
Talamanca Mountain Range

This International Park is situated in the South zone of the country and covers 193,929 hectares. It is called International because its extention goes beyond the border with Panama. The Park is surrounded by Chirripó, Tayní, Telire and Talamanca Indigenous Reserves of the Atlantic Slope; and by the Ujarrás, Salitre and Cabagra ones of the Slope of the Pacific of the Mountain range of Talamanca. In 1982 UNESCO declared Reserve of the Biosphere and in 1983 like Site of World-wide Patrimony, due to its exceptional universal value as much from the scientific point of view, like of the conservation and the natural beauty. Its surface includes very humid, pluvial and cloudy forests, as well as regions crowned by rocky massive tips and where are cold swamp restricted to small areas on high altitude. Among the fauna there are 263 spicies of anphibians and reptiles, like lizzards and salamanders. Mammals such as danta, puma, jaguar, white-faced monkeys and lions are found. Also 400 species of brids like quetzal, eagle, black turkey hen and careto carpenter among others are part of the fauna of this park.
