The bridge was named as PUENTE DE LA AMISTAD DE TAIWAN ("Taiwan's Friendship Bridge") to honor the country that helped Costa Rica to finance and to build it.

The bridge, that was opened on April 10th 2003, has a length of 780 meters reducing the driving time to Nicoya Peninsula in 2 hours and distance in 150 kilometers due to avoid drive to Liberia on the way to Nicoya.
