The villa of Sarchi is the town where are produced th most photographed oxcarts. The smalll farmers who formed the backone of Costa Rica's economy owned ox cart, and each farmer wanted his cart to be a little prettier than his neighbors.

Painted designs on the carts gradually became more elaborate. To this day, among even the small, hand-painted toy carts sold as souvenirs in Sarchi, no two will be found alike. The history of the carts  is symbolic of the pride Costa Ricans take in their possessions, including their national heritage and resources, and the good care they take of them.
