Caño Negro National Park

Caño Negro Park is a damp and heated tropical forest. The lowlands sink under seasonal floods pouring in from the Frío River. The many lagoons, swamps and holillo palm groves are home to a huge mass and variety of commercially important migratory birds, as well as a few endangered species. The Park is considered to be the most valuable wetland area in Costa Rica and one of the best places in the Americas to view concentrations of wildlife Shallow, seasonal Caño Negro Lake (about 800 Ha., 1,976 acres) is a spill-off site for the Frio and Monica Rivers. The Lake plays an important role in maintaining the environmental quality of northern Costa Rica.
