The best word to describe this place is jungle. It is located on the Northern side of Costa Rica's Atlantic Coast. To get to this area it is necessary to cross Braulio Carrillo National Park, then, pass by a large extention of the Atlantic Plains until reaching a dock to continue on riverboat. The canals and Tortuguero river are surrounded by lush vegetation that provides shelter for different species of monkeys, jaguars, ocelots, sloths, neotropic river Otters, 309 species of birds, numerous species of fish, including Gaspar fish, which is said to be a "Living Fosil". Also several species of amphibians and mammals live in this area. One of the aspects that makes Tortuguero a special place is that it is one of the few nesting sites in the world to The Green Turtle (Chelonia Midas). Tortuguero deffinately is a unique place for nature lovers.
